York computing: scenes from a distant past

The following JPEG images are from a collection of slides dated January 1973 taken by an unknown photographer. The scenes are mainly of the York Computer Centre (Steacie basement?). A few were taken in the then new home of the Department on the 6th Floor North of the Ross Building.

Any corrections to the captions would be greatly appreciated, as would any additional images from the Department's past.

• The only form of interactive computing at York in January 1973 was York APL, a version of APL developed for York's low-end model of the IBM 360. The APL terminal was a modified Selectric typewriter.

Department of Computer Science

• Dawn Freeman and Marion Shephard?/Anna Adhihety? in the Department office, N620 Ross, operating the Department's mimeograph.
• Tape drives on the Department's first computer -- an Interdata minicomputer with a 16-bit CPU.
• User I/O for the Interdata was a teletype (max. bandwidth about 110 bits/sec.)
