Tsar Aleksandr the Liberator Mekton Zeta Build
Written by Christopher Thomas. Last updated 30 June 2010.

Angus's Mekton Zeta campaign is almost always full of amusing moments and epic adventure, but the finale for Season 2 really pegged the needle on the "Epic" meter. Long and long ago, during the time of the New Soviet Russia (since followed by Crystal Soviet Russia and today's more popular Soviet Russia Classic), the NSR and anime-Japan were rumoured to have collaborated to build a giant robot of monumental proportions, to defend the Earth against an alien threat. No records of such a project have been found by reputable historians, but that didn't stop conspiracy websites from speculating about it. It was a colourful, if fanciful, piece of Japan's cultural background by the time our characters were running about.

Hints of something deeper turned up over the course of the season, but matters finally came to a head when a tremor was detected beneath the ocean south of Osaka. Our ragtag band arrived in time to see the waters bulge and part to reveal first the hat, then the battle- and time-scarred visage of Tsar Aleksandr the Liberator as his giant robotic form strode into shallower waters, towards Japan.

Hijinks ensued, of course, as the Great Defender was under the mistaken impression that he had to destroy our city for the cause of greater good. He was eventually shut down before carrying out this task, only to vanish mysteriously, just as he was alleged to have done many decades prior. That didn't, however, stop me from writing up stats for him. Two versions are given below.

Background

Tsar Aleksandr the Liberator was the result of a massive undertaking performed in secret by the Japanese and New Soviet Russian governments. As one commentator observed, when faced with the problem of a hostile alien menace, the Japanese were crazy enough to propose a giant robot defender as a solution, and the Russians were crazy enough to build it.

Tsar Aleksandr is a miracle of engineering, even close to a century after the project was originally undertaken. His internal automation and control systems are advanced enough that he can be operated by a crew of just six, and his superstructure and armour are strong enough to withstand multiple direct hits from nuclear weapons, or an explosion of his own ammunition magazines. His ranged armament, the AK 47,000 repeating artillery cannon, compares favourably to most heavy naval cannons of the day, and in close combat his destructive power is exceeded only by those same nuclear weapons he was constructed to withstand. No mobile weapons platform of this scale had been built before, and no (acknowledged) systems of his scale have been built since.

The fate of the Tsar Aleksandr is unknown, and much speculated upon. The most plausible of the alleged reports state that he vanished into thin air from within a military facility. He was presumed lost with all hands, and support facilities were mothballed or decomissioned prior to removing records of the project from official databases.
