The
following information is extracted from the NSERC
web site . Please consult that site for complete information.
- Applicants must
- be Canadian citizens or
permanent residents of Canada;
- be registered (at the time of
application) as full-time students in a bachelor's degree program
in the natural sciences or engineering;
- have successfully completed
18 credits of their degree program by December 31, 2010;
- have obtained, over the
previous years of study, a cumulative average of at least B.
- If the student already holds a
bachelor's degree and is studying towards a second bachelor's degree in
the natural sciences or engineering, he/she may still apply to this
program.
- However, students who are
currently enrolled in an undergraduate professional degree program in the
health sciences (e.g., M.D., D.D.S., B.Sc.N.),
or
hold higher degrees in the natural sciences or engineering (e.g.,
Master's, Ph.D.) are NOT eligible to apply.
- The value of the award from
NSERC is $4,500 for 16 weeks. The supervisor must pay the student at least
$1,125 (25%) on top of this.
- If the student is selected from
another university to hold the award at York, the supervisor must also pay at
least $787.50 extra (4% vacation pay and 10% for benefits). Travel
allowance may also be available when applicable.
- Students must work under the
supervision of a faculty member who holds an active NSERC research grant
(e.g., discovery, strategic, genomics, research partnerships, etc.),
either at the time they submit the application or when they hold the
award.
- At York, the award can only be held during
the summer session.
- Recipients must not have
started graduate studies by the time they take up the award.

register for 6 credits during the tenure of the award, outside of regular
working hours. The course(s) must be approved by the supervisor.
- A student may not hold more
than three USRAs during his/her university career.
- Selection criteria will be based primarily on
GPAs. Academic achievements (e.g., scholarships, awards), and research
aptitude are also considered.
- Aboriginal students, including
those in their final year, are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Female
applicants are especially encouraged to apply.
NSERC USRA
in Industry
The
USRA in Industry is very similar to the USRA in Universities, except that
for the duration of the award, students will be full-time employees of eligible
companies. Students must complete Part
1 of Form 202 , and send the application along with their official
transcript to the company of their choice. The company will select their
candidates and forward the selected applications to NSERC for approval.
