Prism Lab

About The Prism Lab

The bulk of the undergraduate computing needs are met by the Prism facility.  The Prism facility supports approximately 1000 computer science majors
The PRISM lab comprises both general purposes  and specialty  labs. The junior lab is equipped with 40 linux workstations and a monitor's Workstation. There are 6 stations for York Wired network.  YorkNet provides wired network access in designated campus locations using a computer with a 10BaseT compatible Ethernet network adapter/card and a network cable.  Students can access York's wireless service anywhere in the building.

The Teaching lab CSEB 1004 has twenty-four hosts running Linux Operating Systems by default. The CSEB 1004a has twenty-four hosts running Windows XP Operating System by default. At any given time these hosts can be scheduled to run with a Linux Operating System.

All Prism users can use the Maxwell Lab (CSEB1002) during Prism operating hours. That lab is  equipped with 24 Windows  XP OS.

Two 32 page-per-minute Hewlett Packard 8100 PostScript printers located in the Junior Lab handle students printing needs. Four Hewlett Packard 8150 printers provide printing - in the Junior Lab (CSEB1006) and in the Teaching Lab(CSEB1004). Students are able to print their jobs to a hold queue, go to any of the four print release stations in the lab, select the jobs they wish to print using the touch screen, and the jobs are printed for them while they wait. Note your job will disappear from the queue if you do not release it from the queue within four hours of submitting it.

Prism is accessible from remote location via the Internet with Secure SHell (ssh).

In addition to the primary Prism facility, the department maintains a number of laboratories with specialized equipment including the Embedded Systems lab, Robotics lab, Virtual Reality,  Integrated Systems Processing and Multimedia lab

The Undergraduate robotics lab meets the teaching equipment needs of undergraduate courses in robotics, computer vision.  The lab is equipped with two five-degree of freedom CRS robot arms, and an RWI B12 mobile robot.  The lab also contains 4 linux  and 1 windows workstations equipped with multimedia hardware including video and audio facilities.

Prism Servers

Our undergraduate time-sharing server is a  dual Intel Xeon processors supporting Hyper-Threading Technology and 4GB of memory provides exceptional performance and provides remote access. Our file server Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 2.80GHz with 2GB of memory and disk storage with capacity of 2TB using raid5 technology. Our archive server stores up to 5 years of data. We also have Open VPN servers that handle our file serving across our networks

We are currently in the process of upgrading both our File Server as well as Archive server.
