Fall 2009
Changes in red.
The Project component of
this course involves doing a research project and producing a research
paper. The paper must be formatted
as per submissions to "CHI" – the ACM Conference on Human Factors
in Computing Systems, sponsored by the ACM's SIGCHI.
For the research project,
you must conduct a comparative evaluation conforming to the scientific method,
as presented in class. The project
involves posing a testable research question (or questions) and then answering
it (them) through a user study.
The evaluation is "comparative" because two or more conditions
are tested and compared. An
example is our in-class experiment comparing two layouts of soft keyboards over
five iterations of inputting a phrase of text. Several other examples were discussed in class (e.g., comparing three selection techniques
for touchpads or comparing
two input methods for keypads on mobile devices).
The paper should be 6-8
formatted pages.
Submission. Submit your project paper as a PDF or DOC file in Prism
using the command 'submit 6329 project project.xxx', where xxx is either pdf or doc. Perferably, submit both a pdf and a doc version of your
paper.
