Fall 2009

Draft Research Paper

Due: Tuesday November 10, 2009 @ 11:59 p.m.

Changes in red.

Begin your Draft Research Paper by making a copy of the CHI submissions template file (click here) and naming the new file "draft". Please read the information in the template file and prepare your draft paper accordingly. The draft research paper should include the usual sections, as discussed in class in the topic Writing a Research Paper.  The Abstract, Results, and Conclusions sections may be left blank for the moment, since your research is not complete.

The main part is the Introduction, Methodology, and References. The introduction should begin with broadly-placed background information on the topic, followed by specific, more narrowly focused details on the topic. This amounts to a "lit review" -- a discussion on prior research relevant to the topic. Use sub-sections, as appropriate. Try to organize the discussion such that the current state of the art is reviewed, followed by the identification of a research topic. The problem should be clearly stated, and you should indicate what your approach to solving or investigating the problem will be.  For this draft submission, the Methodology section may be written in the further tense, since the research has not been completed.  Describe what you are planning on doing, and give as many details as possible on, for example, the number of participants, the independent and dependent variables, counterbalancing, experiment design, etc.

The topic is up to you. Be original. Remember, this is your research project, not mine.

Include at least two figures, appropriately captioned and cross-referenced.

For the reference section, include at least three published papers, including at least one conference paper and one journal paper.  Choose papers not authored or co-authored by your instructor.  Please, no web postings. The papers appearing in the reference section should be cited in the paper.  The references and citations should be correctly formatted, as required for CHI submissions and as described in class in the topic Writing a Research Paper.

Re length, aim for 3-5 formatted pages.

Submission.  Submit your draft research paper as a PDF or DOC file (preferably both) in Prism using the command 'submit 6329 draftpaper draft.xxx', where xxx is either pdf or doc.
