Labtests, Midterm Exam, Final exam, and Course Grades

  • Labtests are closed-book, no aids allowed. Blank sheets of paper for scratch work may not be be brought into the lab.

  • Midterm Exam:
    The midterm will cover Chapters 1-6 of the textbook. You are also responsible for material from the Guided Tour.
  • It will consist of a written component and a programming component.
    The labtest part of the midterm will take place in the regular lab sessions.
    The written part of the midterm is common for both sections (A & E) and is at 2-4pm on Sunday 26 October in lecture rooms B & C of the Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) Building. Students with last/family names starting with A-K should go to lecture hall B. Students with last/family names starting with L-Z should go to lecture hall C.
    Copy of the midterm test with answers.

  • Final Exam:
    The final exam will cover chapters 1-12 of the textbook. It will consist of a written component and a programming component. The written component will be conducted during the exam period at a time scheduled by the registrar's office (see Examination Schedules). The programming component will be conducted in the lab on the same day (times TBA).

    The questions of the written exams will focus on concepts, not on writing code. A sample of the written part can be found here.

  • Midterm Lab Exam Procedures:
    The labtest portion of the midtem exam is closed-book/no aids.
    Blank sheets of paper for scratch work may not be be brought into the lab.

  • Final Lab Exam Procedures:
    The labtest portion of the final exam is closed-book/no aids.

    Any required APIs will be provided.

Midterm/Final Written Exam Procedures:

  • The written portion is closed-book/no aids.
  • Exam booklets and/or answer sheets will be provided.
  • A (non-electronic) dictionary may be used during the exam, if needed.
  • Proof of Identity must be provided. A photo ID and a student card are required.
  • Blank sheets of paper for scratch work may not be be brought into the exam.

The weight distribution of the course components is as follows:

  • 9% - programming exercises (eChecks)
  • 10% - labtest #1
  • 16% - labtest #2
  • 30% - midterm
  • 35% - final exam

Note also that conversion from numeric to letter grade is applied to the overall mark only and in accordance with the following departmental standard:
