– OK, the final exam is prepared. The exam
has twelve questions with marks totaling 55. Five of the questions, totaling 22
marks, directly relate to the research papers assigned as readings. The other 7 questions, totaling 33 marks,
relate to the power points slides on the chapters in the course text or other
topics presented using power point. Of
the questions related to the course text, there is an emphasis on work
subsequent to the midterm exam. Good
luck and see you Friday.

– Here's the word-frequency list I built from the SMS corpus downloaded from http://www.comp.nus.edu.sg/~rpnlpir/smsCorpus/
(sms-wordfreq.txt). Also, here is the spreadsheet showing the
predictive model and the parametric analysis for the ruler-dropping experiment
(ReactionTimeExperiment.xls).
Mar 23,

spreadsheet (FittsExample.xls) and the short
video (2ball.mpg) I showed in class today. Both are referenced in the slides on Motor
Behaviour Models for Human-Computer Interaction
Mar 21,

slides for the topic Motor Behaviour Models
for Human-Computer Interaction.
Mar 16,
2006 – Sorry to
burden you with another reading, but please read a paper of mine called Motor Behaviour Models for
Human-Computer Interaction. The presentations for the next two classes will
be based on this reading.

the final exam date, the Project deadline has been push back to April 14.

exam is now scheduled: Friday, April 7, CB 120, 9:00
a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Mar 7,
2006 – In class
today, I mentioned the "Half-Qwerty" keyboard. Andrew Tam asked about the dwell time for
the Space key. I didn't know what value
was used, and we couldn't find it in the paper with just a quick look. I have now found it. The dwell time used was 267 ms – that is,
pressing and releasing the Space key within this interval generates a Space
character. Pressing and pausing for more
than this interval flips the mode of the device (as we discussed). The place where this is noted reads,
"Depressing and releasing the space bar within a timeout generates a space
character [3]." The footnote gives
the specific values of 267 ms. BTW,
here's a link to the full paper, One-handed
touch-typing on a QWERTY keyboard.
Mar 3,

chapters 1-7 in the book, the papers read for the course, and the material
presented in class.

did in class today (SimpleExperimentProcedure.doc).
Jan 25,
2006 – Room change:
Starting tomorrow we’ll be meeting across the hall in CB115. The room is a little bigger and the
projector should be better
Jan 24,
2006 – Here is the
unistrokes program I demo’d in class today (jan24.zip)
as well as the slide for Chapter 2 (02.ppt). There is a second paper in the slides that

now posted. Go to the main page for
4441 for a link.
Jan 23,
2006 – As I
mentioned a few weeks back, students enrolled in CSE 5351 are expected meet a
higher criterion in terms of the course evaluation. To this end, the percent of the evaluation for the project has
been increased (to 40%) and the percentage of the evaluation for the final exam
has been decreased (to 20%). Please see
the main page for the course for the breakdown.
Jan 19,
2006 – On the slide
titled “Phone Keypad and T9 Entry” you are asked to read a paper. Here’s a link to a PDF version of the paper,
Predicting Text Entry
Speed on Mobile Phones.
Jan 19,
2006 – Here are the
programs I demo’d in class today (jan19.zip). Two follow
up points: First, I misspoke when I said the OED (Oxford English Dictionary)
contains 500 million words. It’s
actually 500 thousand words, approximately. Of course, these are unique words. Second, here is a link to the British National Corpus web site (http://www.natcorp.ox.ac.uk/). Unfortunately, it does not appear to be free
anymore.
Jan 17,
2006 – If you’d
like to test drive the Fitts’ law software I demo’d in class today, here it is
(Fitts.zip).
I’m not including the source code.
If you are interested in doing anything custom with this code, please
get in touch with me. The zip file
includes an API (FittsTaskOne.html) with some tutorial notes on the operation
of the application. Consult this for further details.
Jan 17,
2006 – Here are the
slides for Chapter 01 (01.ppt). I’ve decided not to continue with the slides in Chapter 1, so
make sure you study the remaining slides and read all of Chapter 1, if you
haven’t already done so. On Thursday,
I’ll begin with Chapter 2, so it would be a good idea to read that chapter as
well.
Jan 17,
2006 – Here’s the
basketball video from today’s class: Basketball.mov. (You’ll need QuickTime to view it.) If you show it to friends, the instructions
go something like, “Count the number of times the white team passes the ball.”. For us, only 6 of 17 viewers saw the
gorilla!
Jan 12,
2006 – BTW, there
is a short video I want to show in class on Tuesday. This note is just a reminder.
Jan 12,
2006 – Here are the
data and some summary results from the experiment we did in class today: Shannon experiment RESULTS.xls.
Also, in case you’re interested, here’s the .DOC file containing the handout
pages used for the experiment: Shannon
experiment.doc.
Jan 10,

Thanks to Swati Jain for locating a PDF of Shannon’s paper. Here it is: Prediction
and entropy of printed English.
Jan 10,
2006 – FYI, a copy
of the course text is on 2-hour reserve in the Steacie Science Library.
Jan 10,
2006 – Here’s the
reference for the Shannon paper I discussed in class today: Shannon, C. E.,
Prediction and entropy of printed English, Bell System Technical Journal,
30, 1951, 51-64. I’d really like to
get this in PDF form, so if anyone finds it online please send me a copy.
