Marking scheme for assignment 1

Q1(a) 4 marks. 

Note:  You just have to give the properties; you don't have to
give an explanation the way I did in my solutions.

Q1(b) 4 marks, same as 1(a)

Q2:  4 marks.

Q3:  8 marks.
The main point of this question is learning how to use
mathematical induction, so I asked the TA to check all of the following
things carefully:

1 for using a correct claim to prove by induction  
2 for appropriate base case
1 for writing induction hypothesis
1 mark:  does the induction hypothesis "match" the base case.
3 marks for the induction step argument, including correct application
    of the induction hypothesis

Q4:  4 marks.  The explanation can be fairly informal.
